If you have ever looked at your accounting reports and felt unsure whether the numbers actually reflect your business, the issue may not be your bookkeeping activity itself, it may be your Chart of Accounts.

The Chart of Accounts (COA) is one of the most important parts of any bookkeeping system. It determines how transactions are organised, how reports are generated, and ultimately how well you understand your business financially.

Every financial transaction in your business is assigned to an account within your COA, whether you use spreadsheets, QuickBooks Online, or Zoho Books. If that structure is poorly designed, your reports become unreliable, even if transactions are being entered consistently.

For small businesses in Jamaica, a properly structured Chart of Accounts is critical for accurate bookkeeping, tax preparation, cash flow management, and decision-making.

What is a Chart of Accounts?

A Chart of Accounts is a complete, organised list of every financial account in your business's bookkeeping system. Think of it as the index of your financial records; every transaction your business makes gets coded to one of these accounts.

Each account in the COA is assigned a name, a unique number, and a type. The way those accounts are organised affects your...Read More

2026 Tax Changes for Jamaican Small Businesses: Key Effective Dates and Compliance Tips

The 2026/2027 financial year introduces several tax changes that will impact small businesses in Jamaica. From the taxation of digital services to revised filing deadlines and increased consumption taxes, these updates can affect cash flow, compliance, and profitability. Understanding what is changing and when these changes take effect is essential for staying compliant and avoiding penalties.

Digital Services and Intangibles Will Be Taxed by GCT (Eff. January 2027)

One of the most significant updates is the application of General Consumption Tax (GCT) to digital services and intangible products supplied from overseas but consumed in Jamaica. This includes cloud software, online subscriptions, and streaming services. Previously, these services were not taxed when supplied by foreign providers. The new rules, set to take effect in the fourth quarter of the 2026/2027 fiscal year (January–March 2027), mean businesses must now account for GCT on these expenses. Proper bookkeeping is essential to record these costs accurately and claim any allowable input tax.

Action tip: Are you a registered GCT taxpayer and have overseas subscriptions? This is the time to review all overseas subscriptions that may now attract GCT. Do you still need some of these subscriptions?

Special Consumption Tax (SCT) Changes (Effective May 1,...Read More

Whether you sell products or services, breakeven analysis tells you the minimum revenue required to avoid losses.

If you do not know your breakeven number, you are operating without a financial baseline.

What Is the Breakeven Point?

The breakeven point is the level of sales at which total revenue equals total expenses, meaning the business makes neither profit nor loss.

At breakeven:

Revenue = Fixed Costs + Variable Costs

Net Profit = 0

Any sales beyond this point generate profit. Any sales below this point result in a loss.

The Breakeven Formula

The standard formula for calculating breakeven is:

Breakeven Sales = Fixed Costs ÷ Contribution Margin

Where:

<li style="text-align: justify;...Read More

Tax season can be stressful for small business owners, especially when income tax filing deadlines are approaching and records are not in order. In Jamaica, late or inaccurate filings can result in penalties, interest, and unnecessary attention from the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ).

The good news? With proper planning and the right systems in place, tax season does not have to be overwhelming.

Here are 10 practical tax busy-season tips to help Jamaican small businesses stay compliant, reduce risk, and file their income tax returns with confidence.

1.
The Digitisation of Religious Organizations

In recent years, an inspiring trend has been unfolding—more religious organizations are embracing digital transformation. Churches, ministries, and faith-based institutions are recognizing that technology is no longer optional. It is a powerful tool that strengthens administration, enhances transparency, improves outreach, and ultimately supports their mission.

At Premium Consultancy Services Limited (PCS), we have seen this shift firsthand. In recent times, we have been assisting several churches and religious groups with accounting, record-keeping, and the digitisation of operational workflows. Many ministries are moving away from manual processes, outdated spreadsheets, and paper files, and are seeking structured digital systems that support accuracy, efficiency, and transparency. It is an honor for us to help modernize these essential functions and contribute to the strengthening of “God’s business.”

Why Digitisation Matters for Religious Organizations

1. Stronger Financial Stewardship

Churches handle tithes, offerings, donations, and ministry expenses that require accurate tracking and reporting. Manual bookkeeping often leads to delays, errors, and gaps in financial visibility.

By digitising accounting systems, ministries benefit from:

<span style="color:...Read More

One of the most common questions small business owners ask is: “How much should I pay myself?”

It is not always easy to find the right number. Pay yourself too little, and you risk personal burnout. Pay yourself too much, and your business could run short on cash. Finding that balance is key, and it starts with understanding your business’s financial position and long-term goals. At Premium Consultancy Services Limited, we help entrepreneurs in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean make smarter financial decisions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to setting your ideal salary.

1. Understand Your Business’s Financial Health

Before deciding on a salary, review your financial statements, especially your profit and loss and cash flow reports. Ask yourself:

What’s my business’s average monthly profit?

Can the company sustain regular payments to me without harming operations?

Is revenue steady or seasonal?

If your income fluctuates, start with a base salary and add bonuses when profits are strong.

<span style="display:...Read More

How Caribbean Entrepreneurs Can Compete Globally Through Technology

In today’s digital economy, location is no longer a limitation; it’s an opportunity. Caribbean entrepreneurs have the creativity, resilience, and vision to build thriving businesses, but many are still confined by outdated systems and limited digital integration. With the right technology, however, local businesses can level the playing field and compete with companies around the world.

1. Embrace Cloud-Based Solutions for Efficiency

One of the biggest advantages technology offers is accessibility. Cloud-based tools allow entrepreneurs to manage operations from anywhere, collaborate with teams globally, and serve clients across borders. From accounting systems like QuickBooks Online and Zoho Books to project management tools such as Asana and Trello, cloud solutions reduce manual tasks and improve accuracy. Business owners no longer need to wait until month-end to see how their company is performing; real-time data is available at their fingertips.

2. Build a Digital Presence That Speaks Global

Your online presence is your storefront to the world. Because many of our readers and clients use QuickBooks to manage their accounting, we believe it’s important to share this story with you as a warning.

What Happened in This QuickBooks Scam

The business owner did what most of us would consider safe—they used the Help menu inside QuickBooks Online to contact support. Unfortunately, the call was routed outside of Intuit’s secure system and straight into the hands of scammers.

Here’s how the fraud unfolded:

The owner was connected to someone posing as a QuickBooks support representative.

The scammers provided callback numbers and claimed there was a problem with the subscription.

An invoice email was sent, demanding immediate payment.

When the owner entered credit card information through the fraudulent payment link, the charges didn’t seem to process. Pressing submit multiple times resulted in multiple payments.

Intuit’s Security Operations team is now investigating. But this incident highlights how quickly accounting fraud can happen—even when business...Read More

Why You Must Enable Multi-Factor Authentication for QuickBooks Online

If you use QuickBooks Online (QBO) to manage your business finances, keeping your account secure should be a top priority. Cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to steal financial data, and relying on a simple password is no longer enough.

That’s where multi-factor authentication (MFA) comes in. This extra layer of security makes it far more difficult for hackers to access your QuickBooks account—even if your password has been compromised.

Why QuickBooks Online Security Matters

Your QuickBooks Online account contains highly sensitive information, including:

Bank records

Invoices and tax documents

Payroll and employee data

Business transactions and financial reports

A security breach could expose your business to fraud, financial losses, and compliance issues. Enabling MFA significantly lowers these risks by requiring an additional step to verify your identity before granting access.

Risks of Not Using Multi-Factor Authentication in QuickBooks Online

Without MFA, your QuickBooks account may be vulnerable...Read More
